Brisk walking is a great exercise to both improve your cardiovascular health and quality of life. While walking, you exercise both your mind and body. This can be a rewarding experience.
The importance of arm swing while walking
While walking briskly, allow your arms to swing freely back and forth at your sides. The arms act as pendulums with the shoulders as their pivotal points and should move at the same pace as the legs. Keeping your arms still or immobile (by putting your hands in your pockets) will decrease your ability to walk briskly. Let your arms swing naturally, never crossing in front of you. Forcing your arms to move at too fast of a rhythm will not speed up your walk.
Proper leg swing enhances rhythm
A consistent and brisk pace requires good technique. As the swinging leg comes forward, it should be fully extended and straight at the knee as the forward heel contacts the ground. As your back foot shoves off, it forces the body to move forward. As your front leg moves to the back, keep it straight. Although some walkers bend the knee as it passed underneath, this will cause the walker to bob up and down, which in turn makes it difficult to maintain your pace and stride. Unless you are jogging, do not bend your knees.
Heel plant to toe off
Your front foot will plant the heel first. Be sure to keep the ball and toes of that foot at a comfortable angle. Never hit the ground flat-footed. Walking with a proper arc, keeping your knees straight and loading your body weight correctly will ensure a steady, smooth gait.
You should toe off and land the front foot properly. The toes on either foot must be pointed straight ahead rather than angled-inward or outward. As your foot touches the ground, your toes will spread a bit. If when you walk, your toes spread too far apart, you will have problems with increasing your walking rate. Good quality walking shoes can help alleviate this problem, as they are designed to ensure a proper walking form.
