A critical care nurse needs more than just book knowledge. They need to be able to thoroughly examine and reexamine all sorts of situations, or even foresee them, and to stay in control of things at all times. And they can’t rely solely on their nursing training and skills. If they want their patients to survive, they will need these abilities, too.
The requirements for successful nursing
Nurses must love interacting with their patients and have a great respect and appreciation for the doctors they assist. Critical care nurses have heavy responsibilities and the physicians rely on their abilities to analyze any situation using their critical thinking processes plus documenting and reporting every detail, evaluating the patient’s situation and continually reevaluating their patient all the while showing understanding and concern for the patient and their family or friends.
Never-ending training:
A nurse’s training is never finished. They must carry on learning and expanding their knowledge as well as acquiring new skills. It is not only doctors that must be familiar with all aspects of and all the latest changes in the field they specialized in, but nurses, too. It is not only patients that rely on a nurse’s skills and expertise, but also doctors and other members of the personnel. The nurse is like the Mother Teresa of the medical field who holds things together.
Love for the job:
In order to be the best in their line of work, nurses must not only be passionate about medicine and the workings of the human body, but also really enjoy looking after their patients. Of course the study of anatomy is part of the nurse’s education and if this is not a really fascinating study for the nurse perhaps nursing is the wrong vocation for them. When the nurse is passionate about whom she cares for, who she works with and the human body then that nurse will be driven to stay at the top of her game.
What other qualities do nurses need to possess?
As far as difficult and important jobs go, nursing is probably one of the most prominent. A nurse can be proficient and successful in dealing with every problem meticulously, but only if she has a healthy dose of confidence in her skills and herself.
Nurses in general, but critical care nurses more particularly, are faced with life and death situations on a daily basis. Because of this, they will either gain strength of character and self-confidence along with a clear perspective on the value of life, or they will simply break down. Nurses can be a soothing and encouraging influence on patients and their families and friends, as well as on their co-workers, if they possess a positive outlook on life. A sound belief in her skills and intellect will provide the nurse with a healthy dose of pride in her work, not to mention herself.
To all nurses and the great work you do, I humbly bow before you.
